Beyond the Checkup: Launching the Barika Medical Centre
Our Story in Barika
Hope for Communities has been working alongside the Barika community for over eight years. Until now, our presence has focused primarily on education projects and sports programmes. Through these initiatives, we have built deep, trusting relationships with local families, giving us valuable insight into their broader needs, particularly when it comes to healthcare.
Recognising a Vital Need
Our charity’s founders and directors bring medical expertise to our mission, including a UK trained doctor and nurse. While a community always has diverse medical needs, we identified a critical, high-impact area where we could make a life-saving difference: preventative cardiac care.
Tragically, we have seen members of the Barika community lose their lives at young ages to sudden cardiac events. Many of these deaths could have been prevented if silent risk factors, such as high blood pressure (hypertension), diabetes, and high cholesterol, had been diagnosed and managed early.
What We Are Doing: The Barika Medical Centre
To address this gap, we are establishing a medical clinic based directly out of our charity’s community centre in Barika.
Our clinic will focus on screening and ongoing preventative care for adults aged 18 and older.
- Comprehensive Screening: We will screen local adults for key modifiable risk factors, including blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, body mass index (BMI), and smoking status.
- Ongoing Clinical Support: For individuals identified as high-risk, we will host a regular follow-up clinic (offered weekly or bi-weekly). Here, patients will receive continuous management, medication, and lifestyle advice.
- Local Expertise: We will employ a locally trained and qualified medical doctor, authorized by the Ministry of Health, to lead and run the clinic.
- Global Collaboration: To elevate our level of care, international medical professionals will volunteer with us throughout the year, sharing their specialist expertise and working side-by-side with our local medical team.
